Drawing and Painting Classes

Whether you’re a first time novice in the fine arts or a seasoned professional in the creative arts , Alex Castro, master artist & author Alex Castro will assist aspiring artists to develop their unique potential.The atmosphere is warm and casual as Alex keeps his classes small or provides one-on-one tutoring .

Classes are held in the artist studio in Stroudsburg (The Poconos), PA. Classes can be given during the week or on Saturdays. For those of you who live out of the area, arrangements can be made to have the class given during the course of a week. Basic Drawing

$ 150.00 – Four – 3 hr. sessions per month

Never taken a drawing class before? Feel rusty or simply lack confidence? This course – is designed for you. Beginning with a simple contour, you will use line to discover a variety of shapes, from the still life to the figure. You’ll draw from life and from art reproductions. Learn to develop form and space. Understand what makes a strong composition. Take a chance. Explore the steps from an idea to a drawing. Push the contrasts for a more dramatic image. Work in black and white with charcoal and pencils, and in color with pastels Students will work primarily from observation of still life, photographs, and art reproductions. Emphasis is on formal issues such as line, shape, positive and negative space, volume, composition, perspective, and proportion. By the end of the course, students should be able to sketch ideas that will produce a valid visual solution and have the technical skills to communicate that solution. Individualized instruction and in-depth critique of work will encourage each student to find a personal approach to artistic expression.

Materials required: 18″ X 24″ rough newsprint pad, a soft cloth or chamois, extra-soft vine charcoals, a soft 2B pencil, drawing pad (any size) and eraser.
A supply list will be available at the first class.

Note, for those students who want to further refine their skills, after the 10 session, they can continue to receive instruction.

Drawing the Figure/ Anatomy for Artists

Would you like to be a good illustrator, painter, portrait artist or just improve your figure drawing skills? A strong knowledge of anatomy is important for drawing, painting, or sculpting the human or animal figure. Students practice drawing the skeleton, skull, hands, and feet using anatomy books. Students learn the shapes and attachments of various muscles and bones.

Beginning to advanced students work from copying great artists of the ancient world, the Italian Renaissance, and the French Romantics. Students expand their skills and find greater expression using contour lines, energetic gestures, and shading. Through small sketchbook drawings as well as large pastel and charcoal drawings on white or tinted, rough or smooth paper, students practice a wide variety of skills.

Materials required: 18″ x 24″ drawing pad, willow charcoal, and a soft cloth or chamois to the first class, at which time a supply list will be available.
Note, for those students who want to further refine their skills, after the 10 session, they can continue to receive instruction.

Sketchbook Drawing

Learn to work comfortably on smaller pages. Develop variation in line and touch. Work on quick sketches as well as on more complete drawings. Subjects range from everyday objects, the figure, to art reproductions. The class covers contours, gesture, shading, and composition as well as creating space and form with color. Draw on white and tinted, rough and smooth paper using graphite, conte, charcoal and colored pencils.

Materials required: 9″x12″ bound or spiral sketchbook to first class along with a variety of pencils, eraser, and sharpener.

Portrait Drawing

Using Oils:

Painting Techniques of the Old Masters

Many artists wish that they could slip back and spend a day with “Rembrandt” to find out about his secrets and techniques.
The purpose of this course is to give students an understanding of concepts and techniques employed by some of the greatest masters in the field of painting during the late 15th through the 17th century, by exploring their secrets formulas as well as reconstructing the classic oil painting techniques in a hands-on, step-by-step approach, which will include lectures and video (The Private life of a Masterpiece) BBC, demonstrations by master artist Alex Castro.
The course will cover the following masters: Durer, Titian, Veronese, Caravaggio, Rubens, Hals, Rembrandt and Vermeer. In addition to providing students with the foundational depth to painting, students will be encouraged to develop their own style using the knowledge and insight gained from this course. The instructor will demonstrate on canvas and wood panel unique styles of the old masters.
Students will learn:
• About the various 16th thru 17th Century Masters-their life, historical period, what the master contributed to the field of painting. Discussion and video (The Private life of a Masterpiece BBC).
• Canvas preparation: stretching canvas, use of litharge(contains lead), applying gesso, sanding the canvas, preparing wood panels
• How to wash oil-removal of impurities in the oil
• How to make their own mediums using methods employed by the old masters
• The proper use and selections of color how and why they were employed by the old masters.
• Selecting the right brushes and how to properly use brushes and clean
• Start at least one painting using the techniques learned on canvas or wood panel.

This course enables any artist or artist-to-be who loves color to understand every aspect of its use in the creation of fine art. Students learn the dimensions of color, value, color contrast, intensity and shifting relationships of color perception. A theoretical framework is provided to enable them to affect mood, depth, and movement in a composition or an environment through the dynamics of color. The course pays special attention to color mixing, to the limitations of pigments, and to the colors one actually needs to buy. Students will also be taught how to prepare their own canvas. This class is useful at any stage of development from beginning to advanced student.
